D.L. Spitznogle I'm in no position to really give advice, but I'd have to say that if you want to be a writer you have to read and write. I know that's the common answer, but if you don't enjoy reading I don't think you'll enjoy writing. Especially because you'll read and reread and rereread everything you write until your eyes melt.
D.L. Spitznogle This may be the worst answer, but I usually don't have any clue what I'm writing at first. The most I have to go off of is a "what if". I'm always thinking, "What if this thing happened?" So I run with it. With Of Onyx and Light it was something like, "What if an ancient demon tormented some people in a small town?"
D.L. Spitznogle I've found the best way to deal with writer's block is to read. Usually, I'll start off by reading some of what I've most recently written. If I'm in the middle of a chapter, I'll start reading from the beginning of that. Often enough that gets me past the block. If I'm still stuck then I plan on walking away from the project for the day. I'll read another book for a bit or watch some TV. If the creativity isn't flowing I usually don't push it. It'll come in time.
