Elizabeth Spaur That's a tough question. There are so many authors I love and who have built some wonderful worlds. If I could only choose one, I would go Sherrilyn Kenyon's New Orleans. I would spend some time at Sanctuary getting to know the locals.
Elizabeth Spaur My mother was adopted. Her adoption records were lost in a fire, so the only thing we know for sure is her date of birth and the city where she was born. There is a theory in the family that her biological parents were related to her adopted parents. The theory began because the couple we suspect were my mother's biological parents eventually had a daughter who could have been my mother's twin. There are so many potential plots within this family mystery, I've never been sure of where I would go with it if I wrote it.
Elizabeth Spaur One thing I've learned is that if you feel like you're blocked you aren't. There's something about your story that's not working. So, if I feel like I'm blocked I go back through my story and try to figure out where I went wrong. I've found characters, which I love, shoe horned into scenes where they don't belong. I've found dialogue that doesn't work for the moment. Once I edited or deleted what wasn't working I can usually more forward with the story.
Elizabeth Spaur It is one of the most amazing communities I've ever been a part of. Most people have an image of the introverted writer sitting alone at the keyboard or with pen in hand. I have met so many amazing writers and being a part of this wonderful group has only made my writing better.
Elizabeth Spaur Put your butt in the chair. If you wait for the perfect inspiration then you'll never finish anything. The best thing I ever did was set a specific time every morning to sit down and write.
Elizabeth Spaur I am collaborating with the Sin City Romance Writers on another anthology. It will be a Christmas anthology and I am writing a contemporary romance to contribute.
Elizabeth Spaur I find inspiration everywhere. One of the best questions a writer can ask themselves is "what if." I will read a story, see a television show or movie and ask myself what would happen if a character made a different choice. I'm always on the look out for a new idea and have a notepad with me at all times, just in case.
Elizabeth Spaur I was having lunch with several of the writers who collaborated on this anthology and BA McIntosh said "let's write an anthology." When we decided to do Vegas through the decades, I volunteered to write a story set in the '50s. I started doing some research on Las Vegas in that era and I was fascinated by the Miss Atomic Bomb Pageant, which was the seed for my novella.
