Most aspiring writer's biggest question about wanting to write a novel is: what is it that I am going write about? I guess the best way to approach this to write a log line on what you think that story is about. A log line is typically not more than two sentences. Then, expand that to 200 words, and now you have your synopsis, and your novel has begun.
Here's my advice for aspiring writers:
1. Set a goal as to what you intend to accomplish and commit yourself to that task.
2. Write daily even if it is one line that you managed to write. Before you'd know it, it has become a page.
3. Keep a notepad (or your phone handy) with you wherever you go to make notes for inspiration to write can come anytime and you want to capture that moment and make the most of it.
4. If you hit a writer's block, don't worry. It's only a phase. It will pass. Just keep in mind the end goal of that particular point you want to address and your mind will work it out for you.
5. Don't give up even when you think that what you wrote is not that great for writing is therapeutic. The more you write, the better your writing becomes.
6. Remember, you're not racing against time to finish your manuscript. Writing takes time and good writing matures through time.
7. Believe in your capacity to tell your story and tell it the best way you can.

When you write you draw upon a wealth of knowledge emanating from past experiences, some you lived, and some learned. The combination of the two and your ability to draw upon your creative imagination produces the script you'd review, correct and rewrite. I think the best thing about being a writer is knowing that you have discovered a part of yourself you never quite knew. The more you write, the more you discover that person and master how he/she likes to tell their story. That would later become the writer's style of writing.

Meditation helps me deal effectively with writer's block. Where it is most effective is in isolating events that may seem complicated to find a better way to tell the story to make the intended connection.

I get inspired to write through observation or paying attention to the things around me. Often, I don't get to see everything but subconsciously I absorb it all. Later those observations will come to the fore and something will pique my interest and my mind then begins to formulate an idea. In going through a series of what ifs, I will be drawn to make notes. Those notes will produce the book title. With that, I will write my log line, then synopsis, and the process of developing characters for the new manuscript begins.

I got the idea to write the hound of Christopher while i was touring the South of England. I had pleasant memories and those memories birthed the idea to write the hound of Christopher, which is now a trilogy.
