Rob Avery Oh, wow, sorry for the ultra-late answer to the question. Dead Downwind is still a work in progress. It probably won't be available until October. However, I just finished a short story ("Afloat") that will be out soon and will be offered as a freebie. The story is about how Sim found his boat. Yes, there is a murder and an investigation and a love interest thrown in there but the story is offered mostly as a prequel to "Close-Hauled."

I had considered titling it "Finding Figaro" but early readers of the work thought that title too Disney-esque so I renamed it "Afloat."
Rob Avery Witchy Eye by D. J. Butler
The Cutthroat by Clive Cussler
Nightschool by Lee Child
And I have two sailing anchorage books for Vava'u Tonga that I am studying intensely prior to a sailing trip there.
Rob Avery I just write through it. I type anything that comes to mind even if I know it is garbage and then I power on through the chapter. Sometimes this is just a brain dump but frequently it results in something that can be heavily edited at a later date. Surprisingly, some of my best writing has come from this kind of exercise.
Rob Avery The creative aspect is very gratifying. Working my own hours on my own projects when I want to is also pleasant.
Rob Avery Write as often as you can. I am convinced that writing is more of a skill than a talent and that this skill can be developed with frequent practice.
Rob Avery I am currently writing the third book in the Sim Greene series ("Dead Downwind") which was inspired by a delivery trip I did with a friend and my son. We sailed my friend's boat from Puerto Rico to Ft. Lauderdale to get it north for the hurricane season. I saw a few things along the way (and in Ft. Lauderdale) that inspired the story.
Rob Avery Almost all of my inspiration comes while on a sailing trip. Book #2 in the Sim Greene mystery series ("Broad Reach") came to me when a lady approached me at Cooper Island with a passport she'd found in a plastic bag floating in the channel nearby. She ultimately got the lost passport to the police but it got me to thinking and......a mystery story happened!
Rob Avery When we lived in Southern California, my wife and I would frequently take our children and friends sailing out to the Channel Islands. One day I saw the Ventura County Sheriffs' office conducting a search and rescue drill out by the breakwater in Oxnard and the thought of recovering a drowned man at that spot sparked the beginning of Close-Hauled.
