Richard Abbott-Brailey Hi Adrienne. I have yet to discover my most useful marketing tool - promoting of Azarias Tor is ongoing - though I believe the giveaway on Goodreads has brought the book to the attention of a wider audience. At the same time I am convinced that the donation of copies to local libraries, which has led to the first library author event, has played a massive part in promoting my work. With regards to social media I use Facebook (where you are welcome to join me), Goodreads (where I have this author page), Twitter and Instagram. The latter proves to be the most successful, closely followed by Twitter. I have a website but that needs further development. Though the publisher has been responsible for marketing Azarias Tor I am constantly seeking different methods and messages on regular basis when marketing my novel. Success may be judged when I receive my first royalties statement next March.
Richard Abbott-Brailey Hi Adrienne,
I agree - new authors need more encouragement and support. I also believe that authors should support fellow authors. Unfortunately I don't have much experience of witnessing established authors supporting, encouraging, and endorsing the work of new authors, unless vast sums of money are involved. I have sent copies of my debut novel to one very established author, who openly advocates reading the work of other writers, and one other who is, perhaps, more of a 'celebrity' author. I have heard nothing from either. I appreciate that they may be very busy people but so am I, yet I find time to offer advice to budding authors and anyone enquiring about my experiences with Austin Macauley. Bookshops could do more to support new authors, and encourage new writing, but their interest is in profit; particularly this time of year, leading up to the Christmas market - a time for promoting 'celebrity' authors and autobiographies. I do believe, however, that there is room in every bookshop for a new author section, and room in newspapers and magazines for reviews on the work of new authors. "Find room in your heart, and space on your bookshelf, for new authors".
Richard Abbott-Brailey I have always been interested in the idea of time travel, since reading HG Wells and watching Doctor Who (I'm talking about William Hartnell). The idea, though, for Azarias Tor was born out of watching a documentary about the Spanish Armada on a history channel; what if I could travel back in time and observe such major events. The rest is 'History '!
Richard Abbott-Brailey From reading as many books of different genre as I could.
Richard Abbott-Brailey The sequel to Azarias Tor: The History Maker - Azarias Tor: The Day Before Yesterday.
Richard Abbott-Brailey Exploring my imagination and realising that readers enjoy the characters and the worlds that I invent.
Richard Abbott-Brailey I don't really suffer from writer's block. I carry around a notebook into which I add ideas as they come to mind. I always write the first draft on paper before going near the word processor.
