Holly Lyn Walrath My latest book is a chapbook of poetry called Glimmerglass Girl. The poems are some of my older ones that all seemed to fit into a theme of womanhood, femininity, and othering/creaturing of women. The title comes from the Greta Oto butterfly, called "espejito" in Spanish, which means "little mirrors." The lead poem in the book uses this butterfly as a metaphor for women. While it looks delicate with its glass wings, it can actually carry up to 40 times its weight. I wanted to explore women's strengths and weaknesses in poetic form.
Holly Lyn Walrath When I sit down to write, the first thing I do is reach for a good book. Reading can be a wonderful inspiration for writers, as it helps me learn the structures, style, voice, and techniques of others.
Holly Lyn Walrath My favorite thing about being a writer is when I get to connect with someone who has read my work and found something that spoke to them. Often it's something unexpected, something I never would have seen in my work. I think literature is interpretable for a reason, so that readers can find meaning that might help them in some way.
Holly Lyn Walrath Developing a daily practice of writing can be helpful. When you start to understand that writing is a practice, not a chore, you automatically begin to come to that place of writing each day. It helps to be consistent, but all writers are different. Finding what works for you and sticking to it is more important than following the age-old advice of "write every day."
