The power of observation and also reading other writers' works are great inspirations for me. I spent the summer in a small town on the coast of Massachusetts, where I found a whole menagerie of interesting characters and happened to read several books about ordinary people in an ordinary town. I got the idea to write this book after I forgave the man who killed my mother twenty years earlier, just before he died in the notorious Angola State Penitentiary. I realized something amazing had happened and I wanted to document the experience for my young daughters to learn about it in the future. It took off from there.
