Thanks so much for the question (and for your beautiful review)! The director, Livia De Paolis, is writing the treatment as we speak, and will write the screenplay (I have no experience writing for film, so will concentrate on the next book), with most of this work coming after she completes everything related to her current project/film, THE LOST GIRLS (which will be released this summer). So we will all have to be patient; many moving parts, as I am sure you know, when it comes to bringing novels to the screen. I'll be sure to post updates here. Go, Emma Rose! And best to you, Judith!

Hi Kathy! Thank you so much for this beautiful praise. Yes, the next book is coming out on March 1. It is called OUR EYES AT NIGHT, and Emma Rose is back--I am so excited! AND I have just signed a film deal for the series, so Emma is also on her way to the screen--isn't that wonderful? I love her so much. Thank you for sharing your question. I am going to keep telling Emma's story for as long as she'll let me! Warmly, M

You're welcome, Joan! I think all writing is a form of being haunted . . . whether or not we are actually writing about ghosts . . .

Driving in far northern California along the coast on a glorious, flowering, misty day, I looked out the window and said out loud: "It is so beautiful here, even if you died you wouldn't want to leave." And then, poof, Emma Rose, the ghost of Emma Rose, showed up. Sat on my dashboard in her skirt and boots, and raised her chin at me. Nothing like this had ever happened to me in my writing life before. So I knew I had to listen to her. And I did.

I think of how many stories I still want to tell, look at the clock, the calendar, my birthday, and realize how short life is--and get to work.

Another ghost story.

Read as much as you can. Write write write write write write write write write write. Don't look at what you write for a while. Then come back to it. Write write write write write write write. Go away. Come back. Unhappy with what you have written? Look it in the eye and say: I will keep coming back. I am not going anywhere. Write. Read. Write write write write write. Go away. Come back. Always come back.

Dreaming up characters and watching them come to life--or in some cases afterlife--on the page.

I leave whatever I'm working on and start something new. The new thing is so unfamiliar, so hard, in comparison to what I've already been laboring over, after a few days I fly back to the original project--with relief and gratitude.
