(view spoiler)[You explain Emma's back story so that what she does to Zadie makes sense, but I was left wondering what was going on in Nick's head. He seems to have really loved Zadie, so what caused him to act as he did? He says to Emma near the end that he knows why he treated Zadie as he did -- so what motivated him? (hide spoiler)]

Great question! I think it dives into Nick's psychological makeup--he was fairly immature emotionally during residency. I think he did love Zadie but bought into the perception of himself as an alpha-male type who didn't need to commit to just one person in a relationship. Later, I think he regretted his actions, but by then, obviously, it was too late.

(view spoiler)[I just finished reading Queen of Hearts and I have to say "WOW," I did not see that twist coming. From what dark corner did you come up with that? LOL. I went through the whole gambit of emotions with these characters.

Thank you so much for reading TQOH! The ending of the book was an evolution--my original draft of the book was quite different. Zadie's husband was a point of view character and Emma, while still committing a betrayal, wasn't quite as extreme. Some of the changes in the book came after it sold to Penguin Random House and went through a bunch of editing. To me the most interesting aspect of what Emma did was not so much what she did as why she did it... she was a complicated character! I liked delving into the psychology of their personalities and their friendship and exploring the issues of betrayal and forgiveness.

Hey Karma! I am in Charlotte! I just joined The Charlotte Writer’s Club but haven’t made it to any meetings yet. Hoping to go to one before Antidote launches at PRB on Feb 18... do you belong to it? What do you write?

You can probably tell I'm an obsessive book lover myself. I'll never approach any of these luminaries in my own writing (and they have variable writing styles and genres) but I love to read Bill Bryson, Tom Wolfe, Donna Tartt, Michio Kaku, Kwame Alexander, and Helen Fielding, along with dozens of others.
I was most influenced to write not by any single writer but by my collective admiration for storytellers in general, and a desire to use my medical background as a setting for an entertaining story. I'm definitely a word nerd.
