I never thought I would write about my connection to Jane Austen - I kept it secret for so long. But eventually it became impossible to avoid reminders of Jane and the ancestral estate of Chawton we shared (160 years apart) and I knew I just had to do something to get over the enormous sense of loss I felt. I then, in 2014, spent a wonderful day in Chawton with Simon Langton, the Director of the iconic BBC TV 1995 series of Pride & Prejudice starring Colin Firth. We talked for hours about my childhood in Chawton, the dynamics of my family and issues of inheritance. It was Simon who first suggested I should write about it - in fact he urged me to write it. I have never written a book before, or had any ambition to be an author, but I eventually wanted to tell my story and finish (for now) the history of my family in Chawton, first documented in 1307.
