Caroline Jane Knight shares more than Jane Austen's name and DNA. As a direct descendant of Jane's brother, Edward Knight, Caroline is the last of the Austen Knight family to grow up at Chawton House on the estate where her fifth great-aunt Jane Austen lived and enjoyed the most productive period of her writing career. Caroline explored the same places around Chawton House and its grounds as Jane did, dined at the same table in the same dining room, read in the same library and shared the same dream of independence.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Caroline Jane Knight I never thought I would write about my connection to Jane Austen - I kept it secret for so long. But eventually it became impossible to avoid reminder…moreI never thought I would write about my connection to Jane Austen - I kept it secret for so long. But eventually it became impossible to avoid reminders of Jane and the ancestral estate of Chawton we shared (160 years apart) and I knew I just had to do something to get over the enormous sense of loss I felt. I then, in 2014, spent a wonderful day in Chawton with Simon Langton, the Director of the iconic BBC TV 1995 series of Pride & Prejudice starring Colin Firth. We talked for hours about my childhood in Chawton, the dynamics of my family and issues of inheritance. It was Simon who first suggested I should write about it - in fact he urged me to write it. I have never written a book before, or had any ambition to be an author, but I eventually wanted to tell my story and finish (for now) the history of my family in Chawton, first documented in 1307.(less)
