Since my most recent book is Always Enough Air, I just got the idea by sitting down as often as I could find time to write another new poem. Most often, the start for a new piece of poetry would hit me right after I finished my bible study and prayer time in the morning. Sometimes, an outrageous news story I'd hear somewhere would make me think, "I really need to write something about that!"
Once a decent number of poems had accumulated on my computer, I thought I should put them together in a book and send them out into the world to see what happened.

I've always had lots of words, and only recently discovered that I can actually use them for something other than witty Facebook posts or interesting book reviews. For me, it's just a matter of writing what I feel, especially when I'm getting a new poem down on the screen. For my novel, the excitement of seeing where the story will go next is a kind of inspiration in itself.

I'm in the middle of writing my first novel. I'm right around the 30,000 word mark, so I've got quite a ways to go, but I'm really enjoying the process. Hopefully, I'll have it ready to go in a few months. I'll keep you posted...

Just sit down and write, and do it often. The more you write, the easier writing something else becomes (usually! ;) ). If you haven't read it yet, get Stephen King's book On Writing and read it. Then read it again. He's the undisputed champion of modern writers, and this book is chock full of mindblowingly simple advice. You can thank me later!

Getting to be the first one to read a great story or piece of poetry. I'm never quite sure how my writing is going to end up, or where it will take me. I get excited every time I sit down to write, because I REALLY want to know what happens next!

I have an online journal I write in from time to time, and when I have trouble coming up with where I want my book to go next, I go to that journal and just start typing. Usually, just writing something will get the flow going. After ripping off two or three hundred words in my journal, I'm usually good to go. Then it's off to my Alphasmart 3000 to get my writing for the day knocked out.
