Val Bodurtha Ultimately, I hope that readers have a fun and fast-paced reading experience that engenders a shared appreciation for the Aztec civilization and its unrealized potential. However, I also hope that readers notice how the issues of classism, misinformed masses, and the way religion interacts with the state affect all kinds of governments, real or imagined. Perhaps, we ourselves do not receive "enlightenment" when we come of age, as Myla did, but that doesn't mean we can't be aware of the issues around us.

I was seventeen and finishing my senior year of high school. My AP World History teacher, Dr. Susan Groppi, instructed us to write a short story from the perspective of someone in either the Aztec or the Mayan civilization. The result was only four pages long, but that summer, I spent time exploring it further. I never dreamed it would come this far.
