I go back and rewrite stuff that I wrote yesterday. I think the key is rhythm.
When I was a copywriter I could get writer’s block but for an extremely short time period because of tight deadlines and nasty bosses. So I forced myself to start writing almost as if I was on a treadmill - going slowly at first but picking up the face as an idea came along.
Thanks for the question.

My wife probably has the best answer - “If you weren’t writing you’d be constantly talking to yourself.” I do think that’s true and the really terrific part is that in a novel you can talk to yourself and answer in the guise of a completely different character.

Well I am very still an aspiring writer so I’m not entirely sure how valid my advice is to anyone about to embark. I am also really lucky to have retired last year with all the time in the world to write (or watch Netflix). I do know a few young writers who are really close to publishing their first novels and from what they’ve said, and I’ve observed, it’s a ton of hard work and constant slogging. But ultimately very rewarding.

I spent so many years as an advertising copywriter trying to make other people happy that I decided one day I’d try to write things I enjoyed. I think that’s really the key to my writing. I’m so thrilled and appreciative when other people like it but primarily I try to make myself happy. And if you’ve read either of my books you’ll see I’m easily amused.

I’m halfway through a follow-up to Killing Harry Bones featuring Roger Storm on another nutball adventure that has poachers, trophy hunters and people who abuse animals getting their full comeuppance.

About twenty years ago, after a particularly long day on a TV commercial shoot in Los Angeles, I ended up a rather intriguing Moroccan restaurant that had bad food but a great belly dancer. I always wondered what her story was and decided that one day I’d try to write a book about her.
