Peter Bartram I'd travel back to 221B Baker Street to meet Holmes and Watson. Perhaps I could pick up some tips which I can use in my own crime mysteries!
Peter Bartram Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. Why? Because I discovered my first Sherlock Holmes book in a second-hand bookshop when I was 14 - and it set me off on a lifetime love of crime fiction. That's a love which encouraged me to launch my own crime series - the Crampton of the Chronicle mysteries.
Peter Bartram As a writer of non-fiction books, it's been the ability to investigate subjects that are interesting and write about them. In the case of my crime mysteries, the pleasure in devising a tricky plot and then revealing it bit by bit to readers.
Peter Bartram I can honestly say that I don't suffer from it. I think this is the result of a lifetime of journalism. When you have tight deadlines to meet, you don't have the luxury of agonising over the words you're going to use. You just have to get on and do it!
Peter Bartram Stick at it. In writing, nothing happens until you get words down on paper - or, these days, on screen.
Peter Bartram My second Crampton of the Chronicle crime mystery. Colin Crampton stumbles into a conspiracy when he investigates the strange theft of a What the Butler Saw machine from Palace Pier.
Peter Bartram I've been a journalist for more years than I care to remember - so inspiration is not quite the right word! When you're a journalist you learn how to sit down and write whatever it is you have to. That's very useful training for a book writer. It's one reason why so many journalists become novelists, especially crime writers.
Peter Bartram Headline Murder follows the adventures of a crime reporter on a daily newspaper in 1960s Brighton, UK. My first job in newspapers was in 1966 on a paper in nearby Worthing. I guess that background gave me the idea. And when I wanted to create a series of crime novels, it seemed obvious to make the protagonist, Colin Crampton, a crime reporter.
