R.E. Devine Ugh. It's truly dreadful but when it has hit me in the past, I've dealt with it by doing something (anything) else. It might be something creative, it might be something mundane but by giving myself the permission not to try to break the block and to actively do anything but, that terrible stuck feeling passes - eventually.
R.E. Devine Seeing your characters and stories come alive on the page and hearing that readers have enjoyed what you've written.
R.E. Devine To stop thinking about it and start writing. It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking you're not good enough or you don't have time. I doubt there are many writers who don't have to deal with bouts of self-doubt but you just have to plough on through. As for time, you have to make it. Grab time wherever you can; on the commute, by getting up earlier or going to bed later, when your kid is at soccer practice. I have written thousands of words in the car waiting for one or another of my children to come out of their music lesson, chess club etc.
R.E. Devine I'm writing Book 5 in my children's adventure series, The Chronicles of Jack McCool: The Curse of the Golden Idol and planning the sixth and final book of Jack's adventures, The Orb of Eternal Fire.
R.E. Devine Having a deadline is always good! I've been a journalist for 25 years now so I'm used to having to write to a timeline. I'm not sure how I would go otherwise! As for ideas, they come from everyone and everything around me, be it snatches of overheard conversations or from books and articles I've read. Mulling things over when I'm walking the dog or hanging out the laundry often brings inspiration, just when I least expect it.
R.E. Devine I grew up in an Irish family where my dad used to regale me with bedtime stories of the legendary folk hero, Finn McCool. They stayed with me and when I decided to write a series of books to entertain and inspire my young sons, I used the old tales as a starting point for my modern-day hero, Jack McCool.
