I know it's cliche to read that the writer dreamed it, but that's what happened to me. I was very sick, bed-ridden, and had a high fever. I dreamed up the main character and took the journey with her. From that fateful night, I've been writing ever since.

I'm always inspired to write. Those far off places always seem to be more magical than the mundane life of this world. It's why people read and write, but what spurs me to sit down and write is that I get agitated and cranky when I don't. So, I sit down and let it out, which usually comes in the form of killing off a character if I wait too long in between writing sessions.

Don't edit as you go, just write. How cares if it's not perfect, it's a rough draft. Great writing doesn't come in one sitting. Write, let it set, the rewrite. Then rewrite again, and again, and again. After about the fourth or fifth time, that's when the writing starts to shine. It's important to remember that editing and rewriting isn't about doubting your work or skill, it's about completing the story.

That it's okay to listen to the voices in my head and write down their life's story.

I have a muse(s), and that is my primary source when I am running dry. Just being around them helps, not necessarily talking about writing. I also change things up, the times I write, or I go read a book. Most people say: read, read, read! Exercise (walking, running, and gym) and shower thoughts always help. Switching gears and editing something new is an excellent way to break up the monotony. Go outline an entirely different book. Get really, really drunk and write random thoughts that come to mind. Shut everyone and everything out and focus: no distractions in the form of human, animal, entertainment, or social media. In short: change things up, and that's when the creative spark comes back. Or just take a break. Or if you really want success, light some candles, strip down, sacrifice a gecko, and beseech the tiny gods.
