I have been researching my family tree and there are a couple of scandals, a murder, and recently a suggestion that I am a descendant of Robert the Bruce, that could all be used in a story. In fact I've already thought about writing the family history for the family to debate.

I walk away from the screen. Sometimes I have to leave it for a couple of days or even weeks. I find inspiration in things I see or hear and once I have an idea in my head, I can start to write.
I find it handy to have a notebook to record things as I find them so that I have access to all the information I need when I am ready to sit and write.

I found sharing my work with a few people helped develop my story. It can be hard to take when someone is highly critical of your work, but sometimes it really helps.

I have a couple of ideas for short stories, which are still in the developmental stage at present. I don't think there's enough in either to develop them into novels. But maybe a collection of short stories will be born out of it. I have also started writing the bones of an idea about a legacy. I am still deciding how many characters and what their roles are to make this work, but I'm sure there's enough material for a second novel.

I observe things around me. Sometimes, something strikes me as 'literary gold' and I have to use it. For example, while I was writing, I read a quote from Benjamin Franklin: "Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead," and used it as a way to show readers what was going through the murderer's mind at a particular time. This is my first novel. I was doing an exercise in a creative writing course, developing a character, and as I was writing the idea hit me that the character should find something in then garden. As I began writing, I found the story seemed to develop by itself. Each idea I included in the story drove it in a particular direction.
