I'm currently working on TERRANCE TALKS TRAVEL: A Pocket Guide to South Africa. I just got back from a month in South Africa where I had planned a once-in-a-lifetime customized trip. As a travel writer/expert, I went with the idea that I might do a travel guide, but I knew I as soon as the trip was over that I had to share what I knew with other travelers going to South Africa.

I haven't had writer's block, per se, but I have had times that I could not make myself sit down and write. I would rather clean out my gutters than write. On those rare occasions, I give in and let go. I work on book promotions, such as social media, or outline my next book project. Or I go to the movies or play with my dog. If I fight it, I know it won't be a productive writing session. This will make me more stressed and frustrated and lead to it taking longer to get back on track.
I have read that one of the best things to do if you have writer's block is to try a creative writing exercise. Also, consider it a 'win' if you get something on paper. This means not being overly critical or over analyzing your writing. There's time to play editor later after you have gotten your groove back.

That's a tough one because I think there are so many things that are great about being a writer. I love meeting "fans". It is great to connect with folks who appreciate your work. I like being able to work at home, which also means I don't have a uniform or have to wear dress clothes. I like setting my own hours. Actually, I work longer hours than many people I know but they are not 9 - 5. Sometimes I get an idea and start writing (in my pajamas) at 2 a.m. or write for ten hours straight. But what I like most, I suppose, is the creative process. I am a creative person and love the writing process. Once I have an idea, I'm on fire to see it through to fruition. I love turning one blank piece of paper into a book. It's an indescribable feeling when I unwrap the proof copy sent by the publisher's production department or when the actual copies arrive from the printer. I did it! I did this! That's the best thing about being a writer.

Read! Read! Read! Seriously, you need to read as much as possible, especially in your chosen genre. If you want to write cozy mysteries, you need to read cozy mysteries written by leading authors. This will show you what readers want and expect. Whatever you write, you need to be passionate and enthusiastic about your story. If not, drop the idea and find something that you are excited about.
