By being observant, seeing what is going on around me in sufficient detail provides most of the inspiration, in other cases, it's digging into philosophy or history books. While it has gone somewhat out of fashion, I still believe in the old adage that "to understand where you are going, you have to know where you have been."

There are probably a thousand answers to this question, for me, I believe that being able to convey something as complex as an entire new human being that I have created, that lives in my mind to another person, such that they can feel what they feel and see what they see is an incredible feeling.

I was thinking about the consternation over the eventual rise of artificial intelligence a while ago which led me to the observation that the right question wasn't being asked. I kept hearing people asking, "What will artificial intelligence do when it is fully sentient, will it destroy humanity?"
I didn't think that was the right question, in my opinion, the right question is, "What will humanity become when it is integrated with artificial intelligence?" That led directly to The Last American.
