Lots of inspiration comes from my own interests and childhood… even dreams I’ve had. Sometimes, I get inspired when I’m out and about – observing people and places.

Creating stories for children to enjoy (including my own) is very rewarding. Writing isn’t always easy and it’s very time-consuming – but as a busy Mum, I love the flexibility of working my own hours. But most of all, I love the world of books and I love writing.

‘The School Dance Show’ was created through a writing course that I was doing at the time. As a little girl, one of my dreams was to become a dancer - and although life took me in a different direction, I still absolutely love dancing and enjoy watching my own children dancing on stage. But the story is also about having the courage to shine our own unique way by not comparing ourselves to others - and the importance of friendship.

I’ve always had an active imagination which has helped give me lots of ideas for new stories. Although I do sometimes get writer’s block when I’m in the middle of a new creation and I’m still developing the plotline. For me, asking myself questions on the story always helps. If the answer doesn’t come straight away, I take a break from writing and then I’ll have a ‘ping’ moment (usually last thing at night or first thing in the morning) when I instinctively know how to fix something that isn’t working or where the stories heading.

I am currently working on a fantasy story titled Neptune’s Secret Code. It’s a chapter book suitable for 7-10yr olds with a real ‘conquering your fear’ theme.

It's important to read lots as well as write - and try to incorporate both into your daily routine. The more you read and write, the more you will develop your writerly muscle, your creativity will take flight and before you know it, you will be addicted. I recommend writing stuff that you like to read yourself or what interests you as a person, which will really help bring your writing to life.
