Mick Morris On and off, between other projects, I've been writing an autobiographical memoir about life as a gigging musician - what it's like when you take away the glamour or recognition of our more famous brethren. The working title is, `Don't give up the day job'.

I don't always have a clearly defined book project on the go, but I store away anything that could be useful - poems, short stories, any random ideas about characters, themes, places, dialogue, etc. In my experience, not much gets wasted.

1. Sit quiet and alone, let your mind wander over the issue, but don't try too hard. Sometimes it helps to draw a `decision tree' which I find can help to show up inconsistencies and reveal options.

2. Talk to a friend about the problem. Listen carefully for clues in his observations.

Either way, make notes. Don't rely on memory. Repeat the above as often as necessary.
