My second novel; which will also be set in Italy, but this time it's a neo-noir-style caper set in Milan.

I try to take a break from thinking about my story. I preoccupy myself by cooking or baking something I've never done before. Concentrating on the recipe and task at hand, my mind takes a break from trying to force my story. And I listen to music - all different genres of music. Eventually scenes and situations start to pop up and I keep playing them over and over in my mind until I have enough to write it down - even just notes of ideas.

I wrote 'The Love Fool' while I was living in Rome back in 2011. I sat down one day and thought to myself, "I should write a book." That was it. I would stroll around Rome and think about stories, situations, interactions and my mind churned with ideas. I would then returned to my flat and started typing - and before I knew it, I had a large chunk of what is now 'The Love Fool'.

My advice to aspiring writers is simply: just write. Don't think about how bad it is; because it may be bad at first. But, that's OK. Because you will go back and fix it later - but wait until you have your story down before you go back. Otherwise, you'll never move forward. And if you're worried your story is bad, don't think like that. You never know who your story will inspire - and you cannot please everyone. So don't let that stop you from writing. And to quote Ernest Hemingway: "The first draft of anything is shit."
