I don't wait to get inspired, I sit down and write, and usually one word follows the other. I have a mantra that goes "This might be [poop] but that's fine, I'm having fun." And I let myself have that fun. Any critiquing from that buzz-kill side of myself is shown the hand. I also like to invite my weirder side (though both sides might be just as weird as the other) to sit in my lap and take the wheel. Sometimes it just sits in the passenger seat but we usually figure out where to go together.

Topaz was started by journaling. I was writing in the first person, talking about the blank page and comparing them to the white plains of what turned out to be Topaz's world. :)

Read Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way" and Steven Pressfield's "The War of Art", oh and "If You Want to Write" by Brenda Ueland. That should be enough to convince you to go for it, and stick to it.
Basically: stay out of trouble, journal, and write every day, no matter what, as honestly as you possibly can.

I resolve any blocks I have by journal brainstorming / streaming consciousness writing. It kind of winds up the process for me. Then when I sit down to work on my novel, I release the crank and let spill whatever comes through. Knowing it's not the final version strips the process from any fear and permits me to just write. I don't look back until I'm done. Then I edit my brains out.
