Hi, Mary,
Truth be told, I never even consider Minneapolis for the story although some of the scenes in the book are set there.
St. Paul has this down to earth, nitty-gritty quality about it that just worked very well for the story. It's like the city chose itself for my story after I had worked out the plot, which is loosely based on the parable of The Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke.
Thanks for asking. Hope you enjoy the read.

Hi, Joanna, Great question. For this story I did both. I lived in Chicago most of my life so that part of the novel is from first-hand experience. I've visited the Twin Cities in Minnesota many times, but never lived there. I loved the harsh winter weather as a setting. So I did some research to bring that location in. For the part of the novel that is set in Mexico, I not only researched the locations but also Latin culture, both in Mexico and in the United States. I tried to find out as much as I could about the immigrant experience from their point of view.
I'm writing two books right now, both have the same combination of familiar and unfamiliar locations.
I'd loved to hear from you after you read the book to learn how well you thought I did with settings.
Thanks for the question,
Jule

Nicole, this is an intriguing question.
My hope is that as we become aware of how easily the predators in our society have hidden their attacks under the guise of "just business as usual," we parents and grandparents will become emboldened enough to talk with our children and grandchildren about difficult issues like sexual harassment. Both our sons and our daughters need to grow up in a milieu that has no tolerance for such behaviors.

I was inspired during to begin writing contemporary fictional accounts based on the parables in the Gospel. I thought they would be short stories, but they evolved into novels. This book, What Happens Now, I originally titled, Bandaged Wounds, and is a rendering of the Good Samaritan.

I set an appointment to write for a short period of time - just anything related to what I'm working on. Almost always when the 15 minutes is up, I want to keep going. My biggest writer's blocks are all the other things in my life that I feel have to be done before I can allow myself to write.

Don't let other things get in the way of your writing. If you really want to write, do so. The really important things will still get done somehow and the rest doesn't matter.

My granddaughter asked me to write a book for her. It sounded like fun so I've written a children's chapter book about the adventures of a group of third graders. I'm in the process of editing it.

I cannot remember not writing. I began writing stories in grade school as soon as I learned to string words together and long before I learned to spell.

The story came from one shared with me and from a desire to make the parable of the Good Samaritan come alive for contemporary audiences.
