Hi, Mary,
Truth be told, I never even consider Minneapolis for the story although some of the scenes in the book are set there.
St. Paul has this down to earth, nitty-gritty quality about it that just worked very well for the story. It's like the city chose itself for my story after I had worked out the plot, which is loosely based on the parable of The Good Samaritan in the Gospel of Luke.
Thanks for asking. Hope you enjoy the read.

For this story I did both. I lived in Chicago most of my life so that part of the novel is from first-hand experience. I've visited the Twin Cities in Minnesota many times, but never lived there. I loved the harsh winter weather as a setting. So I did some research to bring that location in. For the part of the novel that is set in Mexico, I not only researched the locations but also Latin culture, both in Mexico and in the United States. I tried to find out as much as I could about the immigrant experience from their point of view.
I'm writing two books right now, both have the same combination of familiar and unfamiliar locations.
I'd loved to hear from you after you read the book to learn how well you thought I did with settings.
Thanks for the question,

One's very own style of speaking is developed, for the most part, somewhere in our gut. Our mouths, tongues, and teeth move pushing out air in expressive sound long before we have conscious awareness.

We intuit that sound communicates. Born to mimic to survive, we understand before we speak and speak before we understand.

As infants and children, we learn the languages we hear. If expletives frequen Read more of this blog post »
