Kristen, my heroine in book 2, was a secondary character in my first book. I decided she was interesting enough to bring back as a main, though she had to change her ways to be likable. The male I had originally planned to be her leading man was too unlikable to take on that role, so I invented a new one. Vince may have flaws, (all characters need them) but he's my favorite so far.

Through reading. I can't tell you how many times I finished a book and hated to let go of the characters. By writing a series, I don't have to say goodbye to anyone unless I want to.

Seek other authors via writers groups and chat boards. Take online writing courses and communicate with other independent authors. I did that and forged a fantastic relationship with other indies who are a great source of info. Also, try to make time to write every day.
