Janet Stead My most succinct answer is that "I observe" and often ask "what if". I might see a situation that isn't extraordinary and ask myself...but what if? And see where my imagine takes me. And if I like it enough, I write it down (in that notebook that I ALWAYS have with me).
Janet Stead I look around and see what external issues are blocking me - and either deal with them or make a plan to deal with them. Then I wander off on my own, with my trusty notebook, and eventually the block dislodges itself.
