JK Rowling and JM Barrie are also products of Edunburgh University and of course specialised in fantasy, is your next book going to be more of the urban paranormal fantasy or mainly a legal thriller?
Mauro Martone Well the two writers you mention are more child fantasy specialists of legendary proportion, whereas Kertamen is essentially a supernatural tale. Yes the follow up is more of the same based around a judicial theme.

There is always going to be a comparison between your work and Iain Rankin, because you have both similar backgrounds at Edinburgh University and write about Edinburgh cops, were you concious of that when writing Kertamen?
Mauro Martone No, not particularly. Many writers have attended that institution, so no. Ian is a true crime fiction writer, whereas, although Kertamen has a police caper for a spine, the main body is a theological fantasy with some sporadic historical stuff here and there.

What are you currently working on?
Mauro Martone Part two of Kertamen - The Orcadian File, which has a legal theme.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Mauro Martone It came to me on a bit of a whim. I had wondered what it might be like to interview an angel, and at the time, noted from social media that people on both sides of the Scottish referendum debate had felt there might have been a conspiracy.
