Part of it was a natural progression of the story for the first book and there were also things I knew about the characters that were unresolved. I wanted to incorporate some things from at least one of the unvisited worlds, but I wasn't ready to go there yet, so there's some lore leaking in from one of the other worlds.

I spend a lot of time thinking about the story. When pieces start to fit together, I get excited about it and want to write. I still need some external motivation, though, and have found that getting involved with writer's groups, whether local or online, helps me stay on track and producing.

Just finished my nonfiction book on faith - Trusting God When You're Struggling: Overcoming Obstacles to Faith." I'm not sure what I'll work on next, though I have a lot of ideas!

Learn about writing and write. But don't let any lack in your learning keep you from writing. Everyone is bad at something before they are good at it, and you have to start somewhere. I found that once I got my first draft down, I was far more compelled to work on getting it publish-ready despite that it needed a major overhaul. So, finish the story, then fix it if it needs fixing. (It almost certainly will.)

Creating new worlds! I do this literally since I write fantasy, but I think even if someone writes general fiction, they are creating a new place, a new time, a experience. I also figure a lot of things out myself while I write, so I find it helps me grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

I've found when I get stuck, it's usually because I am not happy with something I have recently written or the direction I am about to take the story. If I sit back, take time to think about it, usually a better idea comes to the surface. But not on accident, I have to spend intentional time puzzling over the story. Usually I do this while working on mindless tasks. The trick is not letting your mind wander, and actually use the time to get something done intellectually.
