Hi Dr Jasmine,
You nailed it. I try to only write what I know or have experienced... At least I try to keep it as the backbone of the story. I have never been a plumber on a space station, but I do work for a plumbing company. I have never been a part of an intergalactic military-esque mining operation, but I did spend five years in the Army.
Why do some write and others don't? This I don't know for sure, but I have a personal theory. I think some people have an affinity to seeing life, and particularly their own life, from a narrative perspective. Life is a story. As one dude put it: "Life is but a stage." The Hindus, as I understand it, see all of existence as the unfolding of a play. Those who are inclined to the narrative perspective, tend to write, I think.

Thank you for the question Caprice. Sorry for the delayed response.
Well, I have only written one book so far. Planetfall Origins. I have completed about half of the sequel, but I have put that on hold to pursue a new book entirely until the inspiration to finish the Planetfall line strikes me.

Hey Tom! I'm 25k words in on a planed 75-100k words, wish I had more time to write. The goal is before the year is out.

I'll probably run something like that as I get closer to completion.

I was pretty rebellious in my youth, but when my opportunities starting narrowing dramatically, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. That was a pretty radical shift in mentality to endure. I had to transition from hating authority, to accepting it, to blindly following it. Eventually my enlistment ended, but the haunting questions I had about my service never went away. In many ways, Planetfall Origins is my way of dealing with PTSD and the question that tends to haunt soldiers... Why was I there?

I write what I know, I build off my experiences. Read as many books as you can and ideas will flow.

Planetfall Exodus, the sequel to Planetfall Origins.

Eat the elephant one piece at a time. Just write something. Do it often, eventually you might find you've written a book. It took me five years to finish Planetfall Origins.

The feeling of knowing your not alone in your sentiments is certainly a perk. I write what I know and often I have the false perception that I am an outlier in the way I think about something. Time and again though, I am proven wrong when people identify with my writing.

Go back a page, or maybe just a paragraph and put yourself back into the situation. What would happen next? I really stick to the Stephen King principle of "Tell the truth." Only right what would actually happen in your world.
