I missed my grandfather after he passed away and wanted to do something I knew he would have appreciated.

I think it's important to find a way to self motivate yourself, no matter what you do, write, study, workout, clean the house. I think each person has a different way to get inspired for every different task. For me, when it comes to writing, I prefer to free up a month and isolate myself. Go for a long run in morning and think about what I will write and then come back and work through the night. - It's not easy to find that sort of free time and isolation with a day-job and family, but I have to be 100% focused on the task until it is done, so I'd rather wait until I can have that time.

I am still in the Navy Reserves and work in Cyber Security for my day job, so unfortunately I have not made as much project on part II as I would like. But I have no doubt that I will finish it.

It's quite simple. I want you to tell the whole story, beginning to end, on a single page at first. Yes, that's correct. Get the entire story you want to tell on a single page that you can type out in a day. - Congratulations, you have gotten to the end! Now, every day, fill in the details with a page and slowly let the story grow, in no particular order. Why do it this way? A lot of people start a book and never finish. If you can get to the end on day-1, it's much easier to slowly let the story bloom without feeling like you'll never finish.

I am not a career writer. To me, the best thing about writing is that it brings closure. It always has. It's simply the best way for me to express my feelings. Probably because it take me longer to formulate thoughts and reflect on myself than other people. - This book brought closure to losing my grandfather, who left our family very suddenly and unexpectedly.

Luckily, I've had my grandfather's memoirs to guide me through this book. The only parts that were missing was what people might have thought and felt. Those parts slowly grew as my editor, Paige Gasser, kept making notes next to sections such as: "How did this character feel during this? What where they thinking." - In that sense, the first version was a skeleton of just all things my grandfather heard and saw and I slowly filled in the blanks that he didn't address in the memoirs he left behind.
