My debut novel, The DNA of You and Me, took years to develop. I can't say that it was one idea or even an idea at all that inspired it. Science and the competitive landscape of science research were always in the back of my mind as I wrote, but mainly the choices and the sacrifices people ultimately make, and how in the end it is so difficult to know oneself and much less to know others.

I ask myself why what I have to say is important to anyone and convince myself that it doesn't matter. As Jorge Luis Borges said, "Writing is nothing more than a guided dream." This for me is inspiration enough.

I can live many different lives in as many permutations as my imagination is willing to allow. I get to explore without reservation what haunts me--that is what writing fiction does for me.

I tell myself it's part of the writing process and set the timer and then allow myself to write whatever comes to me in that hour or two. I try to let go of the fear of failure. It isn't easy but it's better than not getting any work at all done--at least for me.
