For my current work in progress it was a mix of sources: my morbid fascination with the American presidential election, my interest in the Kennedys, and a piece of IMDB trivia about John Wayne being asked to run for president in 1968. All of those things swirled around my head for ages and then one night, while my wife and I celebrated our three year anniversary of being boyfriend and girlfriend, we were drinking vodka and cokes, eating takeaway currys, and watching Big Boi videos, when the idea for a road trip book about the 1968 election being contested between John Wayne and Bobby Kennedy jumped into my brain. The initial idea changed a whole lot in the interim 7-ish years, but that was the original spark of inspiration.
