I've always liked to write and used it as an escape. I would write short stories just for myself and I'd get to go all kinds of wild things in them. I remember signing up for KDP Select and discovering a myriad of self-published authors making a living at their craft and thought why not me? I put together some short stories I'd written and that became Dark Water, my first novel.

I work on another project, read news articles, knock out the honey-do list, listen to audio books while working in the garage, watch a TV series or a movie. Sometimes those things just aspire the next sentence. I'll skip around in the book and write something with action then piece together how to get from the writer's block area to what I've just written.

When I need a new idea, I spend time reading the news. Since my books take place in the Caribbean, I read about crime in the islands and the countries that surround the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes all it takes is one sentence in an article to get my mind spinning and once I have that thread, I start pulling on it with specific Internet searches and flesh out the story from there.
