I'm currently writing the sequel to The Color Thief. It takes place a few months after TCT ends, and Helena and Dresden are in it but not the protagonists. Without spoilers, I don't think I can say who is ;)

I got the idea for The Color Thief in a course I took my second (I think?) year at college. It was called Philosphy of Color, and we talked about color from all kinds of different angles (biologically, physically, astronomically, culturally, etymologically, etc.). Not all of it was really my cup of tea (I'm not a science person in general), but it sparked an interest in me. I started thinking about how to make magic the connection that already exists between color and life, and I thought about what might happen if someone took that color away. Thus, The Color Thief.

It's cliche, but just write. Make a routine. Find something that will hold you accountable, and write. My minimum daily word count is 500 words, which on a bad day only takes an hour, and if I do that every day pretty soon I have a lot written.
So write, but also read. Watch. Ingest stories all the time. Find things you love and things you hate and let them fuel you.
