Emily Poirier is thrilled to be doing what she loves: writing. She recently graduated from Hampshire College where she studied Creative Writing and Literature. She spent her final year working on her Division III project, "No More Lions and Lambs: Examining and Re-Writing the Vampire Romance Novel," which went on to become Vampires Don't Need an Invitation. She currently lives in small-town Eastern Massachusetts. ...more

Make a routine. Find something that will hold you accountable, and write. My minimum daily word count is 500 words, which on a bad day only takes an hour, and if I do that every day pretty soon I have a lot written.
So write, but also read. Watch. Ingest stories all the time. Find things you love and things you hate and let them fuel you.(less)

It takes place a few months after TCT ends, and Helena and Dresden are in it but not the protagonists. Without spoilers, I don't think I can say who is ;)
It should be done some time in 2019~(less)

That Time I Read 72 Books in One Year and It was Overwhelming and Exhilarating

I don’t usually blast through books. I have always needed time to let a book marinate, and sometimes reading interferes with the creative process of writing. The past two years, I’ve read <40 books, and I was totally happy with that pace. I didn’t want to be someone who read a hundred books in a year because how can you savor them?

Welp.

A couple things happened that sped me up this past year. 1) Pa

Emily’s Recent Updates

Emily is 23% done with The Fellowship of the Ring: I'm not not enjoying it, and Serkis is killing it of course, but I don't know that thus far any change for the movies has been a "bad" change
I'm certain I'll be good with reading it once and only once and then continuing to just watch the extended editions

“I am trying to apologize to you, Beauty, but I am utterly out of practice. You will find that beasts rarely apologize, if they do at all.”
Emily Poirier, Beauty and Beast: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling

“What do I do now?"
Pity still filling her eyes, she shrugged and offered an apologetic smile. "You go home. Take care of that," she said, motioning to my arm, which was still bleeding a little and covered in dirt. "And I guess you try to forget that monsters are real.”
Emily Poirier, Vampires Don't Need an Invitation

“It was a relationship between a young, inexperienced girl and an older man used to getting what he wanted. He'd come to her when she was vulnerable and convinced her that he was the only one who cared about her, and she'd believed him. And he did care about her, but he cared about himself a whole lot more.”
Emily Poirier, Vampires Don't Need an Invitation

“Gansey had once told Adam that he was afraid most people didn't know how to handle Ronan. What he meant by this was that he was worried that one day someone would fall on Ronan and cut themselves.”
Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven Boys

“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
Madeleine L'Engle

“Fantasy stories will always be popular, as there are always readers who are willing to escape, freely, to the worlds that the authors create, and spend time with the characters we give life to.”
Jason Ellis

“No homework. I got suspended,” Blue replied.
“Get the fuck out,” Ronan said, but with admiration. “Sargent, you asshole.”
Maggie Stiefvater, The Raven King

“Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it.”
Lloyd Alexander
