When I'm not working on other people's books, I'm working on two novels and two nonfiction projects. I write a bit, mull over what I've written, move on to another project and then come back a few days or a week or more later. The nature of the work I do means I can keep multiple projects in my head at the same time.

For me, it is getting to know other writers. I love meeting writers, learning about their stories and what they are working on and finding ways to help writers grow. I'm in two writing groups right now because I need the energy working with writers provides. Writing should never be a solitary, lonely turret experience. Find your tribe!!!

I don't believe in it. I think those who struggle with writer's block are trying to write a linear book. They are going from point A to point Z in a methodical and plotting way. If you are working on a scene and it isn't coming together, write a different scene. Write a rift on the setting in your story. Interview your characters. Or, write a blog post. But write and story worrying about writer's block because all that does is create a self-fulling prophecy.

First, read Your First Fifteen Pages of course. And then, read Gary John Bishop's book Unf*uck Yourself! Which is really helped me finish YFFP. If you have been dreaming of writing a book and just haven't gotten there, read Gary's book. It might be what pushes you toward finishing. But read Your First Fifteen Pages so what you write is brilliant!

I see a problem or I read something and that triggers a what if . . .? I am working on two novels right now and both began with something I read on Facebook and then started down the what if path.

As an agent, my heart sinks when I read a great query and then the first fifteen pages of a manuscript and realize that the story isn’t there. Talk about frustrating! I know what’s missing, and I know how to fix it, but there aren’t enough hours in the day, days in the week, or weeks in the month to respond personally to every writer who queries us. Which, is why I felt compelled to write Your First Fifteen Pages: An agent’s guide to writing a book editors will publish and readers will buy.
