Sheila Matharu As children, my siblings and I would make up characters and stories inspired by our favourite videogames and cartoons. The characters were our way of navigating the moral world; they shaped our beliefs and helped us define right and wrong.
As I grew older, the world around me became inevitably more complex. A fixed work schedule and long commute inevitably meant that I had less time for people I valued. I unconsciously started valuing the pursuit of wealth for its own sake, forgetting that money should be a means to other ends, not an end in itself.
And so, naturally, the characters of my childhood came back to life, helping me reflect on the gap between who I am and who I would like to be. I have a long way to go, but I hope that reminding myself of what it means to be good will help me move in that general direction.
