I was thinking about how different life was for women in Ireland before the church aligned with Rome- Peter Tremayne explores this in his sister Fidelma books.
That made me think what would life have been like for women in Lancashire in the era of the witch trials if England had not been a Christian country? That gave me the basis for the alternate history/fantasy setting for the series.
The mystery plot was influenced by thinking about justice and the experiences that inform people's personality and choices.
I guess that most of my writing starts with a "what if." Stephen King talks about this in On Writing. Make a note of the what if questions that pop into your mind. You never know which of them might be the seed for your next book!
