That made me think what would life have been like for women in Lancashire in the era of the witch trials if England had not been a Christian country? That gave me the basis for the alternate history/fantasy setting for the series.

The mystery plot was influenced by thinking about justice and the experiences that inform people's personality and choices.

I guess that most of my writing starts with a "what if." Stephen King talks about this in On Writing. Make a note of the what if questions that pop into your mind. You never know which of them might be the seed for your next book!(less)
