The best thing about being a writer is touching people with your stories. After Waiting at Hayden’s was first published I remember hearing from one reader who said the story made her re-think a relationship she was currently in. That’s a pretty powerful impact. For other readers the takeaway is enjoyment, validation, an aha experience or laughter. I love hearing from my readers and discussing the themes explored in my novel with them.

Writing and publishing are only part of being an author--getting your book discovered is another. I am currently promoting my debut novel, Waiting at Hayden's, and am headed back to Charleston, South Carolina, where I wrote the first draft to meet with local bloggers and interview with local media. I'm also several drafts into my next novel, The Map of Us, and writing for my blog, sincerelyriley.com.

Waiting at Hayden’s explores the complicated nature of timing in modern-day relationships—a topic I became interested in after I graduated from high school. I had just broken up with my high school boyfriend—not because something went wrong, but because we both got into college in different states. A lot of my college friends were in the same boat. It got me curious about what happens to those people who we meet and fall in love with too soon. In more recent years, I have talked to lots of women who are in the opposite situation—in their thirties, ready to settle down, but haven’t met anyone they truly love yet, so I wanted to explore that perspective as well and ended up with two interconnected stories.
