I am working on a book on Maurice Schwabe, a quite interesting figure connected to the Wilde circle. I'm close to being finished but had to pause because I got another assignment that took precedence, but I hope to be back to it soon.

Occasionally people say "you're a writer?" and act as though this is an interesting thing to be. When that happens it is enjoyable. In terms of a career, it is difficult and sometimes emotionally draining. The only time I can say I really enjoy being a writer is when I am writing.

Identity Theft, my forthcoming novel, came from a lot of different places. The earliest kernel of it came back in the days when the internet was new and it was novel to sign onto AOL for DOS with a dial up modem and meet people with similar interests on line. I wanted to write something that explored those kind of screen-name interactions and the fast intimacy and anonymity it created. Now it is no longer novel, it is a factor of all of our lives. But the same sorts of issues still exist.
I've also had an interest in public personas, the grand public persona of a celebrity and the small version-- the online persona we've become accustomed to creating for Facebook.
Finding the right dramatic narrative to zip through those ideas was the big challenge. Even though the initial spark came a long time ago, the book feels very current. It is very much shaped by the post-recession culture and the sense of dimmed hopes that many people experienced in the post-bubble years.

I stop writing. A book by Victoria Nelson "On Writer's Block" which I read many years ago was valuable to me. Nelson says that when you get writer's block there is usually a good reason for it. Instead of forcing it, go away and wait for your subconscious to come up with the answer. Sometimes I will stop and say, "Why isn't this working?" Then I'll take a nap or a shower or sometimes table a project for months or years. I've learned to make requests of my subconscious and to let it work in the background until the oven timer goes off. When it does, you need to get right on it.
