Jan Turk Petrie Nothing that would be dramatic enough to sustain a whole novel. My books draw very little from my life - I prefer to make up my characters and the situations I plunge them into. If there were some extraordinary mystery in my life, I'd probably prefer to keep it private.
Jan Turk Petrie Earlier this summer I read 'Reservoir 13 'by Jon McGregor - the disappearance of a 13 year old girl affects a whole community. I particularly admired McGregor's prose and the sheer originality of the book's structure. The same is true of 'When All is Said' by Anne Griffin - a touching portrayal of one man's life and the people who meant most to him.
Jan Turk Petrie I keep a notebook handy and try to write down ideas when they come to me. After that, even though I might be doing other things, at the back of my mind I'm try to figure out how I might develop that initial idea into a story.
