I have had a long standing connection with the Homicide Victims Support Group in Australia, which introduces me to the families of victims of domestic abuse. I started talking to a psychologist friend who taught me that there is more to abuse than black eyes and broken bones - many victims suffer silently and the more people I spoke to the more I came to understand just how common domestic abuse is. I was horrified with my findings and felt compelled to write a story that showed the reality of the subject. 'The Skinny Girl' not only lets readers walk a mile in the main character's shoes, it also adds to the current conversation about women's empowerment.

There are so many stories out there, just waiting to be told. Ideas stick and develop over a period of time and the one that has the largest impact is the one I react to.

I don't think I am qualified to advise anyone about writing! I try to write every day, I always have a notebook handy, I ignore the clock and I am passionate about my stories. My mentor, the British novelist, Alan Sillitoe, told me many things about writing; one of them was to always believe and have faith in my work.

Fortunately I never suffer from writer's block. My biggest issue is editing - words are so hard to come by and I hate having to part with them!
