If genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration, then what about merely achieving competence? There is no substitute for rewriting, rewriting, rewriting and rewriting. Then, wipe those beads of sweat from your brow and rewrite your text a few more times. After that, take a few months off to distance yourself from your work (this may be the hardest bit) and review your work with fresh eyes and rewrite a few more times. Oh, and if you truly are a literary genius, you can delete a few of those 'rewrites', but remember that Hemingway allegedly wrote 47 different endings for 'A Farewell to Arms'. What was the reason for so many, asked a journalist? 'Getting the words right,' replied Hemingway.
