As my amazing grandmother was slowly losing her sense of reality and her decline was eminent, I thought back to some of the stories she told and wished for more time. She once gave me an antique ring box -- empty. When I asked her where the ring was she told me it was a very special ring but that I was too young to hear the story. She never told me the tale, so I made up my own.

People inspire me -- their stories, experiences, emotions, and capacity to surprise you. I listen, and I watch. Travel and gray, rainy days often make me reflect and dream. Also, never underestimate the value of "place" -- some places are so beautiful, or gloomy, or silent that I just want to capture the feeling of the place on a page. I have a particular fondness for forests and truly old graveyards. Any place where I can be alone with my thoughts is inspiring -- especially in this hectic world.

All writers struggle, but writer's block can be overcome. When I've written myself into a corner and I can't see what happens next, I write questions. I list all the things I don't know in question form, such as "What happens when ____ finds out that ________?" I find that if I list points I'd like to touch on or questions before bed I discover the answers the next day. I sometimes can answer the questions as I ask them. Allow yourself to wonder and the story will come to you.

Don't give up. Everyone doubts their worth as a writer. Allow yourself to write terrible first drafts but then commit to the work of revising, no matter how long that takes. Also, every good writer needs to read. Make writing a daily habit, and reading a priority. Eventually the words will obey you.
