Kay Spencer Don't overthink it, just start writing. Use anything - your computer, a notebook. The important thing is to get your thoughts or stories out of your head and onto the page. You'll be amazed by how good this feels. Think about what you will do with your words later. There are so many platforms now - they'll still be there when you're ready. Write first.
Kay Spencer By writing! First I must credit Julia Cameron for introducing me to morning pages in her book, The Artist's Way. I read Julia's book out of desperation: I'd been run down by a taxi while out for a run, was badly concussed, suffered all of the side effects that go with that. Beyond the visible physical damage was the unseeable: my brain could no longer process written words with emotion. I could read a book, but it might as well have been the dictionary. This was terrifying on every level - what would I do without words? Without the ability to write? So I processed through my thoughts every day by writing morning pages, and about three months after beginning blurted out a screenplay that was well-received. Morning pages and many of the other exercises Julia takes you through worked for me. I absolutely recommend the book as a way to reclaim the gentle child within. The second thing I practice is simply having a writing routine: setting aside a specific time every day (five days a week - we all need a break) to write. If it's an hour, I stay at the computer for an hour - whether I write a page or a sentence. I show up.
