Kay Spencer's debut novel, Searching for George's Garden, is a work of fiction inspired by memories of her childhood in the southern United States. Set in the present day, the story examines the transformation of life after loss.

Several decades after leaving, Kay returned to the South where she makes her home in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a published poet, former freelance writer for film and video, an optioned screenwriter, and a novelist.

Some of her travel essays and blog entries can be read at https://www.kayspencer.com.

All but two of the characters in Searching for George's Garden are fictional. While the events of their lives in this story are entirely fictional, George Trotter and Adeline Brister were lifetime employees of the Hattiesb

First I must credit Julia Cameron for introducing me to morning pages in her book, The Artist's Way. I read Julia's book out of desperation: I'd been run down by a taxi while out for a run, was badly concussed, suffered all of the side effects that go with that. Beyond the visible physical damage was the unseeable: my brain could no longer process written words with emotion. I could read a book, but it might as well have been the dictionary. This was terrifying on every level - what would I do without words? Without the ability to write? So I processed through my thoughts every day by writing morning pages, and about three months after beginning blurted out a screenplay that was well-received. Morning pages and many of the other exercises Julia takes you through worked for me. I absolutely recommend the book as a way to reclaim the gentle child within. The second thing I practice is simply having a writing routine: setting aside a specific time every day (five days a week - we all need a break) to write. If it's an hour, I stay at the computer for an hour - whether I write a page or a sentence. I show up.(less)

The important thing is to get your thoughts or stories out of your head and onto the page. You'll be amazed by how good this feels. Think about what you will do with your words later. There are so many platforms now - they'll still be there when you're ready. Write first. (less)

The Quiet Carrying On of Life

"It was easier to see, in the afternoon slant of sun, how the extended hours of light and warmth of springtime ignited life. Pollen hung visible in the air while the husks of newly opened buds popped and fell." (excerpt, Searching for George's Garden) We are still while the very earth beneath our feet spins in quiet rotation, rising higher in the sky each day as it nears the middle of its orbit ar Read more of this blog post »
