Love the adam binder series, i had a thought So the immortals are old and some are older than others & the courts are based in direction. Do you think magical beings of significantly long life spans would care about the flipping of earth's magnetic poles? (like a thought experiment). I think it would be interesting if North and South had an ongoing disagreement over who was ACTUALLY north.
David R. Slayton That's really fun to ponder, and since there are magical connotations to the cardinal directions, then you'd get a complete flip after a period of time!

Cool. Thanks for the information. I just sent a similar question because I thought I had deleted the original. Would you mind sharing what color you imagine. In images I see a bottle grey and a black. Which is Adam's car? The best to you.
David R. Slayton It's a bottle grey for sure if you go back the original manufacturer colors. I actually have a little toy version that matches the colors exactly, one in grey and one in black.

At this point do you like to imagine Adam's Cutlass as its original grey or the shiny black it becomes at the end of the first book when he restores it? He agreed that he liked the new color. Which do you like best?
David R. Slayton It honestly shifts a lot in my mind. If I had to pick, it would be the grey, but I love them both.

In the first three Adam Binder books Adam drives his father's cutlass. What is the specific hear and model of his beloved car in the books?
David R. Slayton She's a 1977 Coupe.

when is the next book in the Gods of Night and Day series coming out? :)
David R. Slayton I don't have the date from my publisher yet but it should be in summer of 2026. It's titled the Silent Paths of Night.

When you imagine the planet Aegea what color would it be if seen from the moon? I wonder what your vision is.
David R. Slayton This is a great, thoughtful question! I see it as very blue from space. Sailing and the oceans play such an important role in the series (I'm writing The Silent Paths of Night now), so the sea is a constant presence. The land, when we see it, is pretty arid and rocky, so tan and brown rather than green. If you've been to Greece or Colorado you can likely picture it.

I am currently reading Dark Moon Shallow Sea and I love it! The characters are fantastic and the world-building feels so clear. Will there be a sequel, and if so, when will it be published?
David R. Slayton I am writing book two, The Silent Paths of Night, right now (no word on whether my publisher will keep that title), and hope to see it publishing in 2026!

David R. Slayton I am pretty much a homebody but you might check out Enchanted Grounds. Cool gaming shop and they used to have an LGTBQ+ biweekly game night!

David R. Slayton Not right now. We had to take it down and are looking for a new home for it.

Was there any magic practiced that you was witnessed, that has been the inspiration for magic described in your books, especially from the Adam Binder series? Or, does the things you describe come from books you studied?
David R. Slayton I did a lot of research and read a lot of books, particularly anything by Starkhawk or Drawing Down the Moon. Most of it came from my imagination though and how I saw magic working for Adam and in his version of our world.

I just checked out the French translations of the Adam Binder books and the titles were amazing. Did you have any input on those?
David R. Slayton I did not but I think they came up with great ones!

Your writing style sometimes reminds me of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and some scenes remind me of Stephen King. Are you an avid reader of either author? Have one or both contributed to how you write? Who do you like to read that has been a model for you as a writer?
David R. Slayton Not really. I've read and appreciated the Shining, but honestly haven't gone near any of King's other work. High praise though!

Is Dark Moon Shallow Sea considered to be a YA or an adult book? It looks to me like it is being marketed as an adult book but it reads to me like YA. I would like to be able to say which one it is.
David R. Slayton My stuff gets classified as New Adult a lot of the time so I can see why it fits into both or just confused. DMSS is adult though and gets slotted on the adult shelf.

Hi, I see on your author website that you are open to doing talks at schools about your books or writing. Does it have to be in Colorado, or is it possible you would be interesting to do something in the Weatherford, Oklahoma area some time?
David R. Slayton I think we spoke via email, but I'd definitely be up for a visit to Weatherford!

I love the Adam Binder series. You are a fabulous writer! Can you explain why Adam refers to the warlock he seeks also as a Druid? (I’m not done with Deadbeat Druid yet) Thank you! I vote for more books in the series.
David R. Slayton It's due to the other warlock's powers, which show a unique bond with nature. Deadbeat Druid definitely clarifies the meaning and the relationship between the title and the druid's abilities.

David R. Slayton I hope so. I have treatments and titles for at least three more. It depends on sales, so please keep telling people about the series! I am finishing the spin-off, Rogue Community College, which is out in 2024 and I have my first high fantasy (unrelated), Dark Moon, Shallow Sea, out Halloween this year.

I think i missed something in the first book. Adam mentioned something in the second book about taking the "warlock path". What constitutes someone being a witch and someone being a warlock?
David R. Slayton In my world, a warlock is a traitor (based on a very old meaning of the word). A warlock is a practitioner who betrays the tenets of life (do no harm) in order to gain power. The charms Adam is seeking and destroying in his search for the dark druid are warlock charms as they are made from the bones and pain of sentient magical creatures. Whoever made them would be defined as a warlock for having created them in that manner.

HUGE fan. As someone who grew up in North Texas (and went to college in Sherman) with family in Oklahoma and Arkansas, I want to know if you still live there, or if you went back to do research? Whatever you're doing, keep it up. I just wish you could write faster! (^_^)
David R. Slayton I almost went to school in Sherman but decided on Denver instead! I moved here and basically never left (at least not yet). Since so much of White Trash Warlock takes place here, I used my memories and a little research for the Oklahoma scenes in the first book. Since Trailer Park Trickster returns to Guthrie, I went home to make certain things hadn't changed too much. It was also great to get back and a feel of how the town is in now. It's still beautiful and just a little bit creepy. It was also great to see the Beacon, our drive-in theatre, still up and running.
